An Expired Domain Can Undo a Website That Still Works

The server is online, the site files are intact and the hosting invoice is paid. Yet visitors cannot reach the website because its domain registration expired. Hosting and domain registration are separate responsibilities, even when one supplier sells both.

ICANN’s registrant resources explain domain registration, renewal and account responsibilities. The applicable registry and registrar terms matter, particularly for country-code domains; do not assume every extension has the same recovery period.

Give the renewal a clear owner

Record the registrar, domain name, expiry date, responsible person and backup contact in an appropriately protected operations record. Confirm that the organisation controls the account rather than relying on a former employee’s personal login.

Use current contact details and a recovery route that remains available if the domain’s own email stops working. Protect the account with suitable authentication and access controls. The person who receives renewal messages must also know how to act on them.

Auto-renewal is a setting, not a receipt

Check that automatic renewal is enabled where intended, that the payment method is valid and that the registrar reports a successful renewal. A calendar reminder before the deadline gives time to resolve a failed payment or ownership problem.

Do not pay an unsolicited invoice merely because it contains your domain name. Sign in through the registrar’s known address and confirm the actual account status. Domain-related advertising and transfer offers can resemble renewal notices.

For a small organisation, a periodic review can be brief: confirm the owner, the next deadline, the current payment route and the last successful renewal. Include related domains you intentionally retain, but distinguish them from names you have decided to let go.

If a domain has already expired, contact the registrar promptly through its official support route and check the available recovery process and costs. Do not change website code to solve a registration problem. A reliable address starts with a small administrative routine outside the web server.
